About the Goals 2000
Mathematics Grant

Background and Description of the Project:

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has elected to utilize part of the Federal Goals 2000 funds to invest in preservice teacher education.  Nine grants were awarded across the state to partnerships between school districts, universities and Regional Professional Development Centers, each addressing a different curricular area.  Each of these grant awards is approximately $222,222 each year for a minimum of two years, with funding for additional years contingent upon progress and state resources.  The purpose is to design and implement a plan to simultaneously support school districts' improvement efforts and improve teacher education programs with a strong focus on collaboration.  The plan developed should be replicable or adaptable at other sites, and should also support the current initiatives underway in the state.  The Kirksville R-III School District, the Northeast RDPC and Truman State University are working in the area of mathematics.
